I’ve mixed feelings about this one. I don’t know what I thought. Maybe I should, in some way, have predicted this was going to happen. What I am trying to say is that what Pelecanos showed me with “Right as Rain” is just the preamble of what “Hell to Pay” is. I am a big crime fiction fan, but also, a big mystery fan. Pelecanos is so raw in his writing and manage to handle the whole black vs. white problem in America in a magnificent way as well as others crime-issues that you’ve to be made of steel if you don’t get touched by it. But this book doesn’t have that turn-the-page effect mystery-suspense novels have.
