It would be an international crime to reveal too much of the jeweled clockwork plot of Le Carré's 1st masterpiece, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. But we are at liberty to disclose that Graham Greene called it the "finest spy story ever written," & that the taut tale concerns Alec Leamas, a British agent in early Cold War Berlin. Leamas is responsible for keeping the double agents under his care undercover & alive, but East Germans start killing them, so he gets called back to London by Control, his spy master. Yet instead of giving Leamas the boot, Control gives him a scary assignment: play the part of a disgraced agent, a sodden failure everybody whispers about. Control sends him back out into the cold--deep into Communist territory to checkmate the bad-guy spies on the other side. The political chessboard is black & white, but in human terms the vicinity of the Berlin Wall is a moral no-man's land, a gray abyss patrolled by pawns. Le Carré beats most spy writers for two reasons. 1st, he knows what he's talking about, since he raced around working for British Intelligence while the Wall went up. He's familiar with spycraft's fascinations, but also with the fact that it leaves ideals shaken & emotions stirred. 2nd, his literary tone has deep autobiographical roots. Spying is about betrayal, & Le Carré was abandoned by his mother & betrayed by his father, a notorious con man. (They figure heavily in his novels Single & Single & A Perfect Spy.) In a world of lies, Le Carré writes the bitter truth: it's every man for himself & may the best mask win.--Tim Appelo

"Spionen som kom in från kylan" heter den i övesättning, men jag valde att läsa den på orginalspråket, då jag hade hört att le Carrés engelska skulla vera "immaculate". Det blev jag nyfiken på, och jag var nyfiken på spionhistorierna från hans penna. Och jag blev inte besviken - på vare sig det ena eller det andra. Språket är verkligt fint, om än nästan lite akademiskt ibland. Men dialogen är mycket bra, och stundtals är det bara den som driver storyn framåt. Snyggt. Och historien är fantastisk. Aldrig är man säker på vad som verkligen sker, eller var man ska lägga sin lojalitet. Så här kunde nog spionvärlden se ut under kalla kriget. Jag tror på det. Mycket intressant. Att det inte blir toppbetyg beror - trots allt - på att det faktiskt går lite långsamt då och då. Jag vet inte varför, det skulle inte behöva vara så. Å andra sidan finns inget moment i romanen som inte spelar roll för huvudhistorien. Sånt gillar jag.

After reading Daniel Silva’s “The Secret Servant” I thought I’d try to read “the best spy novel ever written — “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold”. Doing a comparison based on these two books, only (I know I need more knowledge about both authors) I’d say that John Le Carré is in another galaxy when it comes to write Fiction. While “The Secret Servant” is all Hollywood action and its plot moves like a bullet, John Le Carré uses very little of that and instead embraces his writings with a dark depressive atmosphere that hangs through the entire book. If “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold” were a war movie it would carry the feeling of “The Red Thin Line” while “The Secret Servant” would be more like “Rambo”. “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold” is a very good novel and if it’s the best spy novel ever written I’ve no idea, first because I don’t think I will be reading more books from John Le Carré and second, because this is my second and final spy novel. The other one was Robert Wilson’s “The Company of Strangers”. With that being said I don’t consider Daniel Silva in the same category of John Le Carré. I’ve two conclusions: 1. John Le Carré has the same too-down-too-earth feeling of human evilness Robert Wilson brings in his novels. Actually I now realize how much John Le Carré has influenced Robert Wilson. 2. Robert Wilson is also influenced by Noir hard-boiled Crime Fiction, which Le Carré isn’t. So I think I prefer reading books full of dense fatalistic atmospheres from Wilson rather than from Le Carré. cheers Cristian

Var tveksam om boken, eftersom jag inte visste ifall agentromaner skulle falla mig i tycket. Men "Spionen som kom in från kylan" var ytterst bra. Som läsare fick man ta del av en agents liv, hur stor ensamheten är, hur man inte kan släppa garden och låta någon människa ta del av ens liv och de ständiga dubbelspelen så att man slutligen förlorar sin identitet. Det enda som fattades enligt mig, var varför Alec Leamus valde att bli spion. Spänningen ökar mer och mer för varje sida och le Carré vet vad han gör och knyter ihop trådarna på ett magnifikt sätt på slutet. Bitvis svart och bitvis spännande, resulterar i att boken blir en sträckläsarbok. Läste boken på svenska och jag kan inte alls klaga på översättningen. Förmodligen en utav de bästa thrillers jag har läst.
