Catherine Morland: How sorry you must be to leave her...and the Abbey. After being used to such a place, a parsonage house must seem very disagreeable.
Henry Tilney: I gather you have already formed a favorable opinion of the Abbey.
Catherine Morland: Is it not a fine old place, such as one reads about?
Henry Tilney: Ah, but are you prepared to encounter all the horrors that such a building "as one reads about" is apt to produce? Have you a stout heart for things that creak by night? Steely nerves for sliding panels and mysterious cabinets?
Catherine Morland: I doubt I shall be frightened, for I shall not be alone in the house.
Henry Tilney: But we place all the new female guests alone in a far wing, escorted by our aging housekeeper up a winding staircase and along many gloomy passages...to a bed laid in dark purple of funereal appearance. Then on your first night here, a violent storm will reveal a passage behind a tapestry and you will not be able to resist following it to a room with a chest of ebony and gold full of secret papers. But then an unseen force douses your candle--leaving you alone in the utter darkness!
